Digital Portfolios

The internet is an amazing place...

You can find incredible free resources:
    - Videos
    - GIFs/Pictures
    - Simulations
    - Infographics
    - HTML Programs
The world at your fingertips and entertainment for days

...But it can be a very dark place

Time Wasting Sites
Facebook/Twitter/etc.
Netflix/Hulu/HBOGO
Buzzfeed
Reddit
Hundreds of thousands more...
Native Advertising and Blogs
“Statistics”
“Question and Answer” sites
Use a SlideShow as GIF

"Question and Answer" sites

I am not discouraging the use of the internet.   I think it is here to stay and our students need to be able to navigate it and understand what is available to them. I am a big advocate of googling the answer to fact based questions... BUT...
They google questions and find themselves getting their sources from “Question and Answer” sites like:
Yahoo! Answers… Answerbag… Quora… WikiAnswers…
These sites can be a great starting point for advice, but you are just getting advice from a random person with little to no qualifications…
Shouldn’t they just ask you?

Why I built a Website

I wanted to have a place where students could find my answers to these course related concept questions
  • www.FrostPhysics.org
  • Started with a place for class policies and notes/handouts
  • Morphed into additional resources (vids, simulations readings) to supplement classes
  • Evolved to detailed content with embedded videos and multimedia easily accessible.

Teacher Benefits

EMBEDDING!!!
Picture
Other Things:
Link to other reliable resources
Bolster your personal brand and digital presence
Give your students a place to look for answers that you are confident will help them
LOOKS AWESOME!!!
Learn about HTML coding (if you choose)

Creating A Website

Plenty of programs ready to help you make a beautiful website. Most are “drag and drop” elements.
NO CODING NECESSARY
  • www.weebly.com
There are definitely more.

Student Benefits

I have my students create a digital portfolio for their lab work, review pages, and blog posts.
  • Experience with a 21st century skill
  • Fosters creativity
  • Forces them to curate the important topics
  • Will hopefully be an everlasting resource

"There is no science in this world like physics. Nothing comes close to the precision with which physics enables you to understand the world around you. It's the laws of physics that allow us to say exactly what time the sun is going to rise. What time the eclipse is going to begin. What time the eclipse is going to end."
